Evacuating patients with highly contagious diseases is arguably the ultimate test in modern aviation medicine. High risk scenarios, such as human-to-human transmission of the Hantavirus Andes variant, demand more than just a robust medical infrastructure; they require the agility to navigate ever shifting international protocols. Executions of two recent Hantavirus medical evacuations once more confirmed that uncompromising safety standards are paramount when transporting high-risk infectious cases. Test of resilience and agility
The first mission was a test of resilience and agility against the dynamic nature of international aviation and border health regulations. During the evacuation of a symptomatic patient, bureaucratic obstacles were encountered due to changing airspace restrictions and border health protocols. Redstar Aviation team immediately activated its backup plans to keep the mission on track when conditions on the ground changed.

Smooth Operation with Strict Safety Measures
In medical operations requiring specialized methods, such as those involving infectious diseases, appropriate equipment, training and SOPs are vital to mission success. Redstar Aviation's experiences transporting highly contagious infectious diseases have provided the company with in-depth knowledge, quick problem-solving reflexes in the field, and a broad inventory of patient isolation and PPEs suitable for transporting infectious diseases.

With this background and the experience gained from the first mission, planning for the second mission was carried out just days afterwards. In the second mission, three Turkish nationals from the same vessel were repatriated on a single flight aboard one of Redstar Aviation’s Challenger 605 aircraft. The ability to configure the Challenger 605 with up to three stretchers proved advantageous in this case. Personal protective equipment and enhanced infection control protocols were implemented to ensure optimal disease containment.

Logistics of repatriation are crucial where full coordination with multiple government entities were needed as a result of potential risks of the Hantavirus cases. Flight permit processes, one of the most critical bottlenecks in international medical flights, were resolved in just minutes thanks to the Redstar Aviation’s diplomatic networks and also crisis management communication established with authorities in sending and receiving countries. Civil aviation permits, correspondence between health ministries, and airport slot coordination, which would normally take a long time, were quickly eliminated via diplomatic bridge. As a result, the flight crew completed it’s a five-hour and forty-five minute journey from Gran Canaria without any problems.
